We made a trip to visit the producer of this tea last spring.

We had tried a couple of his white and black teas and our conversation was focused mainly around those tea types. Amongst other things, drinking rice wine, eating local specialty foods, karaoke, etc.

When we were leaving his tea workshop, he gave me a cake of the 2020 version of this tea to try. We had accumulated quite the bag of samples during this trip so upon return, I stashed everything away in the storage room and pretty much forgot about it. At some point, I gave a chunk of the cake to a friend and tried the tea once. I recently tried it again (end of March 2023) and was pleasantly surprised.

I called the producer and he told me he didn't have any cakes left of the 2020 batch I had tried but had a few cakes that he had been aging since 2017 in his personal collection. I tried the tea and was once again pleasantly surprised. The additional 3 years of aging has really helped to round out the profile of this tea.

This tea is made from spring 2017 huang pian (older, yellow leaves) material from old/ ancient trees in Lùng Vài, Hà Giang. There is actually a fair amount of younger material in these cakes. I've even found buds in a couple sessions.

This tea brews up into a rich, oily crimson golden soup. Typical huang pian flavor range, sweet meadow flowers and grass with some deeper forest wood notes. Balanced profile with low bitterness and astringency.

Rich mouthfeel, lingering throat effect and strong qi. A great choice for a relaxing session.

Should have good aging potential due to the high raw material quality.
